The Luminaries of Emotion

Walter checked himself out of the hospital. He was feeling more like himself – calm, neutral and in an automatic pilot state of mind. The rental of the three emotions was coming to an end and Walter had a nasty streak. The hospital stay had not changed his inclinations to be inconsiderate and mean. He left the hospital with a small leather suitcase in one hand and Bliss, Melancholy and Agitation in the other. Out into the world Walter went. He was supposed to return the trio of emotions back to their home, but he deposited them into the nearest dumpster instead. He really wanted to hang onto Agitation, but he knew that the three were a set and could not be broken up. So there they waited, the three luminaries of emotion trapped in the dumpster until another human rescued them and they could briefly return to the duties of their transitory life.
Somehow, when they were home they made it work. If you met one of them alone, you might find them too abrupt for your taste. Bliss, with his vapid grin, is always smiling. Tell him a sad story and he will just say, ”That is so sad, I feel terrible.“, but he never looks like he feels bad .
Take Melancholy, a gloom ridden ram with nothing better to do than hang his head and stare out into space wishing he was a sheep. Melancholy always wanted to be a sheep, soft downy fur, good voice and charisma for days.
Agitation was always annoyed. Bothered both by Bliss (that smile) and Melancholy always moping around - slow and saggy, a real downer in a conversation.
At home, they worked well together on garden chores. Agitation would zip around cleaning the flower beds and weed-eating the grass. It didn’t hurt that Agitation was a hare and built for speed. Bliss would rake. He could rake for hours just as long as he had his radio on. Melancholy would make the refreshments and keep everyone hydrated.
The lending process was fast and the trio cold be leased for up to a year. Walter, the human with mental issues, was their most recent charge. Wow! I think every emotion in existence was in that sanitarium - now that was a rugged river of sludge.
So here they sit in the trash - optimistic that another will be in need of their services. The everyday events that befell these three were always unpredictable. After all, emotions often travel in different directions.
